Conquering Strass

About a year ago, CL fanatics was introduced to Samira Strass. A Ron Ron covered from head to heel in Swarovski crystals. We swooned, drooled, and envied those lucky few who had the ability to cough up $3000 for ownership rights. A year later, strass has completely infiltrated the Louboutin world. From the many styles being strassed to the wide variety of colors now being used, if you have the money, you can get all the CL strass you want. What remains unchanged is the majority of the population, like myself, who still can't wrap their mind or bank account around the idea of dropping $3000 on a pair of shoes. Does this mean we are forever doomed to a strass-less CL collection? I think not! Recently a DIY phenomenon has taken over the CL forum on tPF and this weekend, I officially jumped on the DIY CL strass wagon :) A snapshot of my workspace:

I promise to blog about this project in its entirety as soon as I finish but for now back to strassing and preparing myself for the remarks and looks I will get at work tomorrow when I respond to the usual post-weekend small talk:

Coworker: "What did you do this weekend?"
Me: "Glued thousands of Swarovski crystals to a pair of my shoes, you?"
Coworker: "Wait, what?"

$100 bucks says this conversation will actually take place tomorrow...LOL

**UPDATE: 02/23/2010 - Okay, this project is taking a lot longer than expected...mainly cus I'm getting lazy :P Maybe another week or two before they're done...sowwee :)

Good luck! You are a better woman than I! There's no way I'd ever have the patience to do that.

Can't wait to see the results.

Out of curiosity (I hope this isn't a rude question), what is your upper limit on shoes? I can't bring myself over $800. Not that I should be spending even that much!

I bet the shoes will look hot as soon as they're ready! I wish you luck because I know that I wouldn't be able to do it neat.

aren't swarovski crystals expensive by itself? i'm just wondering because it cost my MIL a whole lot of money just to get me a necklace done...I can only imagine how much you need to cover an entire pair of shoes! I like crafty stuff!as long as it does not involve sewing anything, lol. reveal soon?

Manolo: Trust me, it gets addicting!! I'm the most artistically challenged person on earth so if I can do this, anyone can :) Dont worry, your question isn't rude at all..lol, I've seen much worse hence the comment moderation :P My current max is at $1395 but thats only for exotics!

Isa: I'll be sure to post as soon as they're done! I actually looked at pictures before I started and I decided that I didn't like the ones that were super duper neat, with the crystals all lined in perfect rows so I'm actually trying to do the placement as randomly as possible ^.^

SoCal: DO IT!! LOL, I'm tempted to hold a DIY strass day at my house so we can all get together and just chit chat as we glue...LOL

Hey Junee! The total for the pair I'm working on will probably end up being $300. I already spent $270 but I think I may need to re-order towards the end. That is a lot but if you compare that with $3000, this is a bit better :P

Happy New Year, Thavasa!! LOL,I could always use more shoes and purses but I think I might actually be forced to slow down quite a bit in the very near future...details in a few months ;)

Wow I had the same idea since I wanted to wear the Samira Strass as my wedding shoes but could not afford them. How are yours coming along? I will be starting mine soon.

Sounds like fun and the end
product will make every other
woman swoon.

Hi Tara! I finished the heel over the weekend and I'm pretty happy with how they turned out. The rest of the shoe is a bit more frustrating. I'm not sure why...I think I'm just getting more and more anal with the placement process as I go?? I'm also slightly worried that the crystals will pop off so tonight my goal is to reheat the crystals to make sure the adhesion is as strong as possible. Which ones are you going to strass?!

Hi Marie! This is indeed a lot of fun and I do enjoy the process but like I was telling Tara, it does get frustrating at times. I also do sorta, kinda wish I had gone with my suede Ron Rons instead but oh well :P

Well, did it? (Waves a dead president in the air)

Can't wait to see the results! ... next you need to learn how to put in studs to make Mad Marys ...

LOL, Kim, it took me a good minute to figure out what you were referring to!! Anyhoo...I'll be honest, I skipped over the strassing part and just told everyone about being scared out of my mind over Paranormal Activity :P Where should I make the check out to? :D

Michelle - I was aiming to finish by the end of this weekend but it looks like it might take be another week cus I really just dont have the energy to spend too much time on this project during the weekdays :( Hahahaha...DIY Mad Marys would be pretty freakin sweet!

Yes I am going with the Samira Strass. I just started tonight ill let you know how it goes. I am determined to prove my Fiance wrong and that I can do this DIY project. I have decided to go with random placement as well. I think I may do the heel all the same size of crystals.

Purse Addict said...

Good luck, Tara!!! I have been super lazy about my DIY project but I'm 80% done which means I really would only need about two days to finish. I'll see if I can squeeze it all in this weekend (I say that every weekend..lol)

I know how you feel I ran out of crystals so fast. I ordered some more today from ebay. They seller has a great price on them for such large quantities. I have a partial heel so far lol. So far its been almost therapeutic but will see how long that lasts. I used some silver pumps for the strass. Post some pics.

It definitely is therapeutic!! And slightly addicting :P
